The chicks are here

We picked up the baby chicks today. We don't need 10 grown up chickens but only girl chickens, or hens, lay eggs and it is really hard to tell if the babies are boys or girls. We will raise these 10 until they are old enough that we can figure out who is a hen. Any guesses on how many hens we will get?

We gave each chick a temporary "baby name" so we can make sure they are all getting held and keep track of how they are each behaving. We will also get to compare how they look as chicks and adults. We don't know their breeds so it will be a surprise.

This is Chin. Chin has white starting right under its beak and going all down its tummy.

Black Beauty is mostly black with yellow on its beak and feet.

Cap has a little brown hat on its head.

Cheep has a black back, beak and feet. Its tummy is white. Cheep is the loudest cheeper.

Ducky is mostly yellow with some black wing markings.

Pecky is white and black.

Can you guess why this one is named Tall?

Cheeks has puffy down under its eyes.

Stripe has a distinct stripe right down its back.

Last but not least, Cheep-Cheep-a-Peep. This bird also has a stripe, but is more yellow than Stripe.

The chicks seem pretty happy in their new home. We made the door to the cold brooder bigger so they can get in and out easily.

When we shut off the light they all climbed in the box and went to sleep. Their first day at Double Creek has come to an end.
